Match 1 – HOME v THE SUFFOLK Thursday 4th April

In our opening fixture of the season, Heydon Venerables got off to a great start by defeating The Suffolk by 5 – 1 in what were a set of close fought contests.

An excellent match: in cold, breezy and dry conditions, with good food, course in excellent condition, topped off by great company.

Match 2 – AWAY v ROYSTON – Friday 12th April

On our annual visit to ‘mount Royston’ we came up against a team in very good form. However, an enjoyable day with good company, decent weather and good food. We lost the match 0.5 to 5.5

Match 3 – HOME v GIRTON – Friday 26th April

It’s always a pleasure to entertain our friends from Girton, and today was no exception. Weather was good although a little windy, food was good and some close fought matches. The final result was a 2.5 to 3.5 loss to Girton.

Match 4 – AWAY v HENLOW – Thursday 16th May

Good weather yet again (we’re being spoilt this year) for our away match at Henlow. Another set of close fought matches with four of them finishing on the 17th hole, and one on the 18th. Good food and good company. The result was a win for Henlow 4.5 to 1.5

Match 5 – HOME v THE BEDFORD Thursday 23rd May

Yet again, some superb weather for our home match vs the Bedford. Very enjoyable company, followed by one of Mrs A’s excellent buffets.

Unfortunately we couldn’t match the Bedford on the course, and a comfortable victory for them by 5 to 1.

Match 6 – HOME v HENLOW Friday 14th June

After a week of unrelenting rain, the clouds finally broke just in time for a dry(ish) home match against Henlow.

As always, excellent company followed by an extra hot curry courtesy of Mrs A. After losing 4.5 to 1.5 away, we were up against it to regain the Heydon / Henlow Seniors Trophy.

But some stupendous golf from Heydon resulted in a 5 to 1 victory, and regaining the trophy with an aggregate score of 6.5 to 5.5.

Well done team.

Match 7 – AWAY v THE BEDFORD Monday 24th June

Excellent golf was played by both clubs on a day of sweltering heat with honours even, resulting in 3-3 draw.

Match 8 – HEYDON MEN Saturday 29th June

On a scorching day 24 elderly folk braved the elements for the annual Ven’s vs Men match. As usual, it was all played in excellent spirit and was followed by a light cordon bleu lunch of sarnies and fries. Congratulations to the victors on the day with a win for the Men 4.5 – 1.5. The overall result since we started this fixture is now 3 each, so over to Mr Truckle to do the honours in 2020.

Match 9 – AWAY v BARKWAY Monday 29th July

After a wet and dreary weekend, the weather brightened considerable for our away match at Barkway. An enjoyable day, with good company topped off with a splendid roast meal. Barkway made the most of their handicaps on home turf, and ran out easy winners with a score of 6½ – ½

Match 10 – AWAY v GIRTON Friday 2nd August

Although once again being spoilt by the weather, we again struggled to match our opponents scoring. As always with Girton, excellent company, a very enjoyable match, followed by some good food. The result was a win for Girton by 5 1/2 to 1/2.

Match 11 – HOME v ROYSTON Friday 9th August – POSTPONED DUE TO ADVERSE WEATHER now Tuesday 1st Oct

Match 12 – HOME v HEYDON LADIES Wednesday 21st August

Once again, an excellent turnout for the ever popular Vens V Ladies match, with 10 x 4 balls competing for the Ilyas Akhtar trophy. The weather was excellent, the company was good and the day was rounded off by a light lunch of sandwiches & chips.

For the first time in 20 years competing for the trophy, honours were even with the result a 5 – 5 draw.

Match 13 – AWAY THE SUFFOLK Thursday 19th September

Match 14 – HOME v BARKWAY Friday 4th October

On Wednesday 1st May we hosted Bourn Golf Club in the CAGU Seniors Knock-out competition. Some excellent play from Heydon culminated in a 3 – 0 victory in 3 closely fought matches. To some extent this made up for losing to Bourn in last year’s final, so well done boys.

Representing Heydon Venerables were Captain Richard Gardner & Graham Handscombe, Malcolm K-F & Steve Truckle, Dave Sephton & Steve Board with Bernard Brown kindly acting as reserve.

On Tuesday 28 May 2019 we hosted St Ives Golf Club in the 2nd round of the CAGU Seniors Knock-out competition. Unfortunately we lost the match by 2 – 1.
