2018/19 Season

CROSS-COUNTRY 13th FEBRUARY 2019

On an almost spring-like day an excellent turnout of 35 Venerables set off for a couple of circuits of the Essex course to compete in the annual Cross-Country event. It was quite clear from the results that certain Ven’s have had far more practice playing out of the rough than others. Two of the winning team, who both featured in last year’s winning team, ably assisted by ‘is that Malcolm over there in the rough’ appear to be making this competition their own.

Our thanks to Bernard, assisted by Richard, and to David Baker and Alan Parkes, for making the competition and grand draw a successful event, and thanks to Andrew for the photos.

FIVE CLUBS & CURRY – 16 JANUARY 2019

On a chilly, damp, breezy morning an excellent turnout of 38 Venerables set off clutching their favourite 4 clubs and a putter, for this much anticipated annual event.

A ‘mixed bag’ of scores in what were somewhat difficult conditions, followed by one of Mrs A’s curries. Our thanks to Bernard for organising the event.

In 1st place, on count back, also with 88 points were David Baker, Richard Gardner and Neil Staples.

On a crisp, but sunny and dry morning, 28 Ven’s set out to play the annual 4 club competition with their choice of 3 clubs plus a putter.

Not surprisingly, the scores were a mixed bag, with some players missing their other 10 clubs, and some not really noticing their absence. The golf was followed by an excellent curry from Mrs A.

Our thanks to Bernard, who stepped in for Merv, and did a splendid job of organising the event.

Sir Donald Tebbit Trophy 2018

A great turnout with 32 Venerables competing for Sir Donald’s bogey competition. Weather was hot and sunny with just a gentle breeze which resulted in numerous good scores, however no one could match Barry Carse who set a new competition record with a magnificent score of +8, this equates to a gross score of 80 and net 64.

Many thanks go to Mervyn Cooke and Richard Gardner for organising the day and to Tony Leigh for overseeing it all.

Nineteen Venerables set off for the annual romp through the rough, aka Cross Country, and were joined for lunch by another four Venerables, not wishing to miss the opportunity to sample Mrs A’s Haleem.

On a blustery day, the second placed team (on count back) with a score of 171 were Dave Watts, Tony Leigh and Ken Hart, but the winners, with a magnificent score of 159, were Martin Lane, Richard Atkinson and Russ Morgan.

Our thanks to Bernard, Merv, Alan and Richard for organising the event and the ‘Grand Draw’, and to Dave for officiating in his farewell event as Venerables captain.

WHO’S THE BOSS!

On a bright, but very breezy day, 22 intrepid Venerables participated in the 5 club challenge, all looking forward to one of Mrs A’s excellent curry’s at the end of the round (that is apart from the 5 less adventurous Ven’s who opted for the alternative menu of ham, egg and chips). The 22 were joined by a further 5 who attended for the lunch only.
An indication of the difficult conditions were reflected in this years winning scores, which were some 15 points lower than 2017.
The event was organised by Merv Cooke, Alan Parkes and Richard Gardner. Andrew Wyatt was in charge of photography.

A beautiful day and enjoyable all round. We had 31 for lunch, 29 players and 2 recovering “sick notes” for Mrs A’s superb curry and only 3 HE & Chips!  A seeded draw for teams of three, produced a close result. The format was best 2 scores out of 3 players, one 2 ball received a one third allowance.

A great day! Thirty nine Venerables played in the Cross Country competition and two more turned up for the Haleem. The weather was fine and the Haleem terrific. Pity those who hadn’t the taste for Mrs A’s splendid cuisine, but the plate of ham, egg and chips was a happy alternative. Many thanks to Mervyn Cooke with Bernard Brown for organising the golf, to Mrs A for the Haleem (many had 2nd helpings but two who shall not be named had 3), to Andrew Wyatt and Mickey Breedon for the photos and to Richard Gardner for presiding over us so well in this the last event of his reign.

RICHARD’S FAREWELL EVENT – flanked by two vices

For the first competition of the New Year the weather was kind and the lunch superb. With a format of just four clubs and a putter, the scores, as usual, indicate that a full set of clubs is not necessarily an imperative. Altogether there were 35 players plus Alan Parkes for the curry. All thanks to Mervyn Cooke and Bernard Brown for the competition, to Mrs A for the excellent curry, to Andrew Wyatt for his fine pics and to Richard Gardner for presiding over the event.
